Visions was born out of interviews I had with Francis X. Pavy, one of the most significant painters of Southern culture, after my first introduction to his work in 1990. The book is divided in three parts. The first one is a general introduction situating Pavy in the history of painting, and underscoring his radical authenticity and originality, as well as a universality paradoxically born out of his deep Southern and Louisiana roots. The second part reproduces our interviews over the years, where we deal with Pavy’s artistic beginnings, his technique, his vision, and the origins of his creations, with emphasis on the tales and stories that moved him. In the third section, entitled “Pavicons”, Pavy presents the sources of his artistic inspiration and the recurrent themes that run through his body of work through a large sample of his iconographic elements.
Alexandre Leupin is Phyllis M. Taylor Professor in French Studies at Louisiana State University. He has written extensively on literature, art history, psychoanalysis, and philosophy.
Francis X. Pavy is an internationally renowned artist. He lives in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Visions est né des interviews que j’ai réalisées avec Francis X. Pavy, l’un des peintres les plus importants de la culture du Sud, après mon premier contact avec son travail en 1990. Le livre est divisé en trois sections. La première est une introduction générale situant Pavy dans l’histoire de la peinture, soulignant son authenticité et son originalité radicales, ainsi qu’une universalité paradoxalement née de ses racines profondes dans le Sud et la Louisiane. La deuxième partie reproduit les interviews que nous avons réalisées au fil des années, où nous abordons les débuts artistiques de Pavy, sa technique, sa vision et l’origine de ses créations, en mettant l’accent sur les contes et les histoires qui l’ont inspiré. Dans la troisième section, intitulée « Pavicônes », Pavy présente les sources de son inspiration artistique et les thèmes récurrents qui traversent son œuvre à travers un large échantillon de ses éléments iconographiques.
